Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena embraces transparent peer review and preprints by becoming the first “PCI-friendly” mathematics journal

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena (MMNP), a research journal published by EDP Sciences and the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI), has become the first mathematics journal to partner with Peer Community In (PCI). PCI is a non-profit, non-commercial platform that publishes recommendations of preprints after peer-review through specific communities of researchers.

PCI Mathematical and Computational Biology (PCI MCB) is a specific community of researchers reviewing and recommending preprints in the field of mathematical and computational biology to turn them into valid, citable and final articles. Once recommended, a preprint can either remain on the preprint server or can be submitted to a journal for publication.

“It is clear that MMNP is a key journal within its field and we are delighted it has agreed to become our first ‘PCI-friendly’ mathematics journal,” commented Amaury Lambert, co-founder PCI MCB.

MMNP is one of 90 PCI-friendly journals to date, and the first mathematics journal to be listed. Authors submitting an article to MMNP can indicate at the time of submission that their article has been previously reviewed and recommended by the PCI MCB community. If the recommended article falls within the scope, the journal may use the PCI reviews and recommendation to strengthen or speed up the usual peer-review process of the article.

As an example, the article “Non-Markovian modelling highlights the importance of age structure on Covid-19 epidemiological dynamics” by Bastien Reyné et al. was first posted as a preprint on MedrXiv, then reviewed and recommended on PCI MCB, and finally submitted and published in MMNP. This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License CC-BY 4.0. The PCI reviews and recommendation are openly accessible on the PCI MCB platform.

“MMNP has been quick to diversify and innovate where it can,” said Anne Ruimy, Senior Publisher, EDP Sciences. “PCI has already established itself as a leading platform and we are happy to support its work around preprints especially when coupled with transparent peer review.”

MMNP was the first mathematics journal in the world to transition to open access under the Subscribe-to-Open model in 2020. Through this partnership with PCI, the journal continues to embrace progressive publishing practices and move towards open science.

Authors of articles recommended by PCI who wish to publish their article in MMNP are invited to consult the instructions for authors for further information.
